The lighthouse has long stood as a symbol of steadfastness, drama, and isolation. As these structures have become antiquated and thus endangered, architectural preservation organizations have formed to insure their survival. While both these books are organized according to geography and dramatic tales of rescue and tragedy, the authors' approaches differ greatly. Bachand includes a factual prelude to each lighthouse's narrative that outlines date, maker, cost, illuminating apparatus, and height where known. Extant and destroyed examples are illustrated in 153 black-and-white photographs. Though exacting, this work is marred by a number of typographical errors and the misspelling of at least one place name. Roberts and Jones have created a more emotional and artistic book, one that features 45 illustrations of existing structures. Further, while Bachand aims at the serious student, Roberts and Jones are more popular in tone. Neither is completely satisfying.
