TIPPED IN TO THE INSIDE OF THE BACK COVER (with the following text added to the margin): *A copy of the USS Bassettās log showing the ship's entry into the harbor off Samar Island of the Philippine Islands at 0419 am on 43 August 1945. The log has been declassified and released for distribution. This copy was procured by L. Peter Wren from the National Archives, Washington DC. The copy of this log will enable the reader to learn the manes of the survivors recovered by the Bassett Crew. The last two names unfortunately did not survive the five days in the water. The Bassett arrived on the scene at 13:30 midnight on the 3rd of August, recovered 152 men by 0556 am of that morning and departed the tragic area by o600 am on 3 August 1945.
