The criterion referenced assessment is designed to provide a qualitative record of individual performance on gross and fine motor task. It is designed for ambulatory/mobile developmentally disable clients aged 5 to adult. The SPA consists of four gross motor tasks and three fine motor tasks that are broken down by performance components. The score sheet provides a breakdown of each task into the performance components necessary to complete the task, enabling the therapist to grade the qualitative aspects of a response. This system allows for consistent, objective recording of the "quality" of the client's performance to be used for comparison following treatment. Although developed specifically for cognitively handicapped, school aged clients, the SPA has been found useful for clients in other age groups and with a variety of sensorimotor problems including dysfunction in postural control & movement patterns. The manual contains chapters describing the use and interpretation of the SPA assessment; case examples of treatment plans based on the SPA; criteria for scoring; and extensive background reference listings.
