John Taddey, D.D.S., is a 1968 graduate of New York University Dental College and took his postgraduate training at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in New York City. He was a member of the teaching staff at Montefiore for five years.
A recognized expert specializing in the treatment of TMJ, Dr. Taddey has lectured extensively throughout the United States. He is Chairman of the TMJ and Facial Pain Conference of Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego, which is dedicated to furthering an understanding of TMJ and helping doctors apply that understanding in treatment.
Dr. Taddey makes his home and has his practice in La Jolla, California.
A dentist who specializes in treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), Taddey has written a very readable book discussing TMJ's symptoms, causes, and treatment. He provides insight to the suffering of an estimated 60 million Americans (about 20 percent of the U.S. population), and he includes chapters on nutrition, stress management, coping, and how to live a "normal life." The book is well illustrated and has a glossary of medical terms to help the lay reader. Recommended for libraries with demand for self-help and consumer education books.

From Appendix A General Questions and Answers
Q: How many people are affected by TMJ? Why is it sometimes called a "woman's disorder"? A: It is estimated that 20 percent of the American population, one out of every five people, have TMJ symptoms. One common type of TMJ disorder strikes in the ratio of four woman to every man (women in their thirties and forties are most often affected), and this has led some to think of TMJ as a woman's disorder.
Q: How is whiplash a cause? A: Whiplash is a traumatic episode in which the neck and head, and thus the jaws, are uncontrollably and violently jarred. This causes brusing and tearing of sensitive and delicate tissues within the TM joint, as well as cervical muscles, muscles in the neck and spine, and the muscles that operate the jaw.
Q: Is TMJ a "fad" disorder? A: TMJ has been studied for over fifty years. It was first described by a Dr. Costens, a physician specializing in the treatment of diseases of the ears, nose, and throat. It is now recognized as a specific disorder, and it can now be treated successfully. It is a real medical problem getting more attention as it is better understood. It is not a passing "fad".
Q: How are teeth grinding and clenching a factor in TMJ? A: Excessive teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, and clenching of the teeth exert extra pressure within the joint. Bruxism also causes a drying out of the sensitive tissues around the TM joint. When this happens and any movement occurs in the joint afterward-- opening the mouth or chewing-- friction is produced and wear and tear of the delicate tissues soon follows.
Q: Does insurance cover a portion of TMJ treatment? A: Often insurance does cover a portion of TMJ treatment. The exact amount of the coverage depends on the specific insurance plan which you have. TMJ treatments are usually covered under your major medical plan, and the dentist, physician, physical therapist, psychologist, etc. will all help you in submitting your claim to a major medical carrier. Patients who have substantial direct injury--for example, whiplash in an automobile accident-- usually find their automobile bodily injury insurandce covers the cost of treatment.
