9780962600159: Law and Justice in Everyday Life: Featuring the Cool Justice Columns of Law Tribune Newspapers

Synopsis

Law And Justice In Everyday Life features tales about ordinary citizens as they encounter the justice system, with an introduction by the historian Howard Zinn.

The 254-page book begins with an examination of the cover-up of a hit-and-run death in New London, Ct., followed by unsolved murders in Stamford and Darien in which police know the prime suspects. A prediction on the performance of Michael Skakel in the Martha Moxley murder trial highlights another chapter.

A chapter entitled "The Politics Of Justice" features columns from Law Tribune Newspapers that led the state Judicial Department to cancel its subscriptions to the Connecticut Law Tribune. These headlines include: Free The Oppressed, Exploited Judges, All Rise For Judge Bobby Knight and The Bench Protection Association.

Government misconduct in Boston, Washington, Oklahoma is examined throughout the book’s 12 chapters. A chapter on Civil Rights And Freedom Of Speech recounts the heroic struggles of librarians, students, gay parents and whistleblowers as they aspire to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Honest and talented police officers and prosecutors tell their stories in chapters entitled On The Job, For The People and Cops And Perps.

From the Author

"I always wanted to have a column and, eventually, a book of columns. So I guess they were all written for this book. Jimmy Breslin is my hero, and when I read his book of columns ("The World of Jimmy Breslin,") I thought that was something I'd try to do one day."

About the Author

Andy Thibault is a columnist for Law Tribune Newspapers and co-author of several business books. Thibault also has wide-ranging experience in public service and has worked as an investigator for law firms in Connecticut, New York, California and Washington, D.C.

He has lectured on media relations for business and political groups in the United States and internationally. He teaches courses in journalism at the University of Hartford and communications at IMPAC University in Punta Gorda, Fla.

Thibault’s work as an investigative reporter and feature writer has drawn critical acclaim and earned numerous state and national awards. A judge from the Society of Professional Journalists writing competition said this about Thibault’s probe of the cover-up of a hit-and-run death in a Connecticut city: "The writer explores whether New London’s former mayor benefited from a widespread cover-up for the 1973 hit-and-run death of a college student. Witty, compelling -- the writer has a knack for speaking in conversational tone, all the while quietly weaving in crucial facts to support his arguments that more people should be outraged by the shoddy circumstances surrounding the 1973 investigation."

Thibault also serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of Education in Litchfield, Ct., as a Fellow of the Yankee Institute for Public Policy Studies, and as a member of the Advisory Board for Western Connecticut State University at Waterbury. He is a former commissioner and hearing officer for the Connecticut Freedom of Information Commission, an agency charged with opening access to government records.

He manages a non-profit foundation that awards $19,000 annually to young writers in Connecticut. The Trust, funded by IMPAC and the Connecticut State University System, is now in its fifth year of operation. He is Editor of APS Publications, the publishing arm of the Association for Productivity Specialists, and President-elect of the Litchfield-Morris Rotary Club.

Thibault has been an editor for newspapers including The Commercial Record, The Hartford Courant, the Stamford Advocate and The Times Leader of Wilkes- Barre, Pa. His profiles of subjects including poets and prosecutors, as well as essays on the arts, have appeared in magazines including Connecticut Magazine and Northeast Magazine. His work has also appeared on Page Six of the New York Post. He is a former board member of the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. A licensed professional boxing judge, Thibault is also former Chairman of the Connecticut Boxing Promotion Commission. He attended Boston University, majoring in Political Science.
