The author presents a very different view of Carroll's 'children's books', concluding that the nonsense, however brilliant, was also a mask which concealed Victorian smut, and that this 'light-hearted friend' was filled with rage seeking audacious release. Would this become the finally explosive means of retribution for an early life of emotional and sexual abuse by a man never able to escape childhood?
