Synopsis

Flying home from England on a B-17, at the end of WW II, Mark Freeman was a lonely, broken man. No one would be waiting to welcome him at the end of his journey.

Mark's parents had been killed in an automobile accident while he was on his way to England, and, while he was there, Polly Cassel, the girl he loved and planned to marry, had died mysteriously.

When Mark returned to the United States, he stopped at Lexington, Kentucky. Polly had lived in the Kentucky Mountains, not too far from there, and he thought that some day he would visit her family and find out what had caused her death.

The next day, while seeking seculusion near the Kentucky River, he found Annie Colman hiding on a wooded bluff. The day before, at the funeral of her grandmother, a huge, ruthless man, named Bill Bundy, had threatened to force her to live with him in his cabin.

When Annie saw Mark, she was afraid of him also, so she started running away. As she ran, she fell and sprained her ankle. He convinced her that he would not harm her, then took her to a hospital to get her ankle treated. Annie was an attractive girl, bue he was still in love with his memory of Polly.

Later, he flew to the mountains in his small plane, hoping to find Polly's family. He crashed above their cabin, but he was not injured. He soon met Polly's sister, Jennie. She reminded him of Polly. He was drawn to her at once, but the mystery of the mountains, that had in some way been connected with Polly's death, cast a shadow over his relationship with Jennie and her family.
