Lucille Conrad Outhwaite was born on the family homestead in Peoria, Illinois on February 26, 1909, the daughter of Della May and Albert Frederick Conrad. She attended schools in Illinois, Winnipeg Canada, and Denver, Colorado and enrolled in the University of Nebraska and completed her studies at Mills College in 1932. Her ballet training began with Lillian Cushing in Denver. She danced with the American Ambassador Ballet Company and toured Europe and South America during 1933-1935. She continued her studies with the Legat School in London and the New York City Ballet from 1936-1941. She created her own ballet school on Long Island, New York from 1949-1957 and she produced and directed two original ballets, donating all proceeds to local charities. From 1957-1959 she returned to Europe to train with The Royal Ballet Company of London. She married Leonard Outhwaite, Anthropologist, Explorer and Writer in 1936. They lived in New York, Washington D.C. during World War II, and later returned to New York. In 1955 they moved to Switzerland for five years. Then they returned to America and settled in Newport Rhode Island. From their home base in Newport, they traveled extensively. This, her third book, "To the Ends of the Earth", published in 1997, details her travels around the world.
