This book is a first in the trade which provides a centuries-old secretive process for the creation of decorative ornamentation. Compo formulation was a jealously guarded "secret" which was kept in families and handed down mostly from father-to-son. Through this medium which is commonly known as "Compo," certain trades such as the picture framing and furniture manufacture industries, permitted manufacturers to mass produce previously hand carved one-of-a-kind wood ornamentation.

This book may be used as a primer for anyone wishing to start or expand a craft-oriented business. One professional compo repair job, for example, would pay for this book.
My wife and I "lived" the processes detailed in this book. After practicing the various aspects of creating frames in our basement, we opened a part-time picture framing business in 1967. Shortly after that we met a master craftsman who also became our mentor. Our mentor. who passed away at the age of 101, had already accumulated 50 years experience by 1967 creating and mounting compo ornaments in his own business. He learned his trade from master craftsmen in his time too, and became well known in the picture framing trade. Under his tutelage we became proficient in making various molds and in the formulation and application of compo ornaments in our own picture framing business. The techniques imparted in this book are based on the accumulation of knowledge from masters of past centuries. Our mentor was famous for framing the well known nude painting called "Stella," which is still hanging in a Nevada saloon last we heard. We also had the privilege of assisting our mentor with the creation of compo picture frames which were hung in the lobbies of a famous San Francisco Hotel depicting scenes of the 1906 earthquake. Old-timers should remember this hotel which was located near the old historic "Crystal Palace," long since torn down. This is a wonderful trade/craft that will provide great satisfaction and a good livelihood to any dedicated individual. We know because we did it ourselves and we credit this business with allowing us to "retire" early to our dream location in the gold country of the Sierra mountains.
