The large, ungainly, twin-engined flying boats used by the U.S. Navy as patrol aircraft played a significant if unheralded role in the Pacific and Atlantic during World War II; far more has been written about the Mustangs, Liberators, and Wildcats in the American air campaigns than of patrol planes like the PBY. Freeman does a solid job telling the story of this forgotten plane and the crews that flew it during a little-remembered 1942-43 campaign against the Japanese in the Aleutians. Useful for its depiction of service life on World War II's secondary fronts and suitable for comprehensive military and aircraft collections.
