Few physicians have high-school and college diplomas with the same date on them. Cardiologist-nephrologist Chasis has led that kind of life, though, and has obviously enjoyed it, as will his readers. Chasis took his M.D. in 1930 and went on to work with such outstanding clinicians and researchers as John Wyckoff, William Goldring, and Homer Smith. Dean Wyckoff's perceptiveness about his school's students and faculty led him to push Chasis into each of the three worlds of the title--practice, research, and teaching. Practitioner Chasis emphasizes the importance of the personal medical history and cites several telling examples. Researcher Chasis' accounts of his renal group's pioneering work could well bring students into the excitement that research offers and the perseverance it requires. Teacher Chasis gave his students, at whatever level, the benefit of an instructor who made the necessary points and stressed, above all, the importance of listening to and working with each individual patient.
