Where to Look for Information
The guide is divided into six sections:
Jackson County
Johnson County
Northland
Leavenworth & Northwest
Lawrence
Other . . . Trails & Offroad
The starting point of a ride determines into which sector a ride is placed. For example, a ride is placed. For example, a ride starting in Prairie Village and going to Lee's Summit with 75% of the ride in Jackson County is, nevertheless, a Johnson County ride.
Safety
Since almost all rides are on public roads, the guide defers the responsibility for your safety to you. Obviously, conditions for any given ride vary with the weather, the traffic, the day of the week, and the time of day.
Meeting Other Cyclists
If you happen to be an inexperienced cyclist or new to the area, we would urge you to join one of the cycling organization listed on page 160 and to try an organized ride. In addition to the Bike Clubs, we have included a listing of Bicycle Dealers to aid in purchasing a new bicycle or in servicing the one you already own. These bicycle shops are both capable and willing to suggest routes to try and organizations to join.
Expanding Horizons
Most cyclists tend to "ride in their own backyard." We suggest you use this guide to explore other areas. On page 165 there's a list of organized rides for every day of the week. This is an excellent way to learn new routes and to meet new people.
New Features
We've added a number of new features to this book. Probably the most important is the section on off road cycling and bike trails. Please read and heed our comments at the start of each of these sections.
We hope the Guide to Cycling Kansas City will become your passport to new, adventuresome, and exciting bicycling in the Kansas City, Lawrence, and Leavenworth areas.
