VANCE CORUM: Over the last 30+ years Vance Corum has worked on the development and renovation of hundreds of farmers' markets across the U.S., and studied many markets in Europe, Asia and South America. His experience has made him a featured speaker at conferences across the continent, and in Cuba and India.
The New Farmers' Market is based on his lifelong dedication to expanding farmer, rancher, food and other small business enterprises. Along with his multiple projects, magazine articles and presentations, another book is in the pipeline.
MARCIE ROSENZWEIG: For 12 years, Marcie operated a market farm whith multiple sales outlets including local farmers' markets she helped establish. She is also the author of Market Farm Forms.
ERIC GIBSON: Eric is the author of Sell What You Sow! The Growers' Guide to Successful Produce Marketing, considered by many to be the "bible" of small-farm marketing.
The authors divide their book into three sections. Part 1 one covers selling at a farmers' market, offering advice on choosing crops and products, keeping records, staffing a booth, setting prices, setting up displays and merchandise, and using color and texture to enhance eye appeal. Part 2 gives information on starting a neighborhood market (the name's important, the authors say), attracting farmers, market demographics, advertising, publicity, tastings, and other special events. Location, timing, and day-to-day concerns also are discussed. Part 3 deals with such topics as social issues and Web sites. In five appendixes the authors discuss insurance, a market study, customer surveys, market profitability, and benefits. An extremely helpful public library handbook. George Cohen
