What if we were to presume that our bodies and spirits were actually completely integrated rather than being packed up in separate boxes and stored in warehouses on opposite sides of town? Our religious and cultural traditions have certainly taught us that the spirit is good and the body is suspect. Having It All contains some pretty simple ideas and practices, accessible to almost anyone who is willing, that will help the reader have and enjoy integration. We are not taught to listen to the wisdom of our own bodies! Consequently we are overstressed, underloved, and out of sorts. Our lives can change: we can have more grace, ease, community and connection in our lives, our work, and our play.

About the Author

Cynthia WintonHenry and Phil Porter are teachers, performers, lecturers and philosophers. They codirect WING IT! Performance Ensemble and have developed a technique and philosophy called InterPlay, a combination of improvisation, spiritual discipline, and play, which they teach to groups of all sorts. They are committed to exploring the wisdom of the body, both individual and corporate, and to helping others rediscover the wholeness of body, mind, spirit, and heart.

Phil and Cynthia were part of Body & Soul Dance Company for many years. In 1989, they formed WING IT! Performance Ensemble, which uses InterPlay as a performance art, combining dance, theater, music, comedy, improvisation and theology.

Cynthia is ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and is adjunct faculty member at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley. Phil is a lay preacher and theologian in the United Church of Christ and also owns Phil Porter Studios, a graphic design firm specializing in computerassisted design.

Throughout their sixteen years together, Phil and Cynthia have performed and taught across the country, and have travelled to Canada, England, Scotland, Australia, and Thailand. They have taught and performed in theaters and dance studios; in colleges, universities and seminaries; in health care situations; and at national conferences across the country. They are the authors of numerous publications, including Body & Soul: Excursions in the Realm of Physicality and Spirituality; The Wisdom of the Body; Poems, Prayers and Proclamations; and Having It All: Body, Mind, Heart & Spirit Together Again at Last; and have produced four videosconcert tapes of God, Sex & Power, and Fear & Abandon and The Unbelievable Beauty of Being Human, and an Introduction to InterPlayand an audio tape, Tales of a Suburban Mystic. They distribute their work through their own WING IT! Press.

In 1994 they initiated the InterPlay Leadership Training Program, and are training others in their teaching and performance techniques. Participants in this program live throughout the United States. There are InterPlay groups active in several cities in the United States.
