9780964239067: The Origin of Consciousness and the Mind-Body Problem

Synopsis

This book presents a profound and incisive new paradigm which explains how the evolution of language-namely our growing capacity to label, describe, explain, and communicate our objective and subjective experiences-led us from being biologically aware to that mysterious phenomenon we call consciousness and, eventually, to the mind-body problem. It also shows how our expanding ability to explain our experiences led to the idea of mind. It further demonstrates how our capacity for internal dialogue led to the idea of the personal self and to self-awareness.

From the Author

What makes the evolution of symbolic language so important is that it ultimately deals not only with the essence of reality and consciousness, but with the abstract ideas of God, soul, self and mind. Although many philosophers have tried to explain these long-standing philosophical issues, their difficulty has been due to their intense focus on using language to understand them rather than address the question of how the evolution of language created them. Because the evolution of our ability to label, describe, explain and communicate our objective and subjective experiences are so taken for granted, these functions have remained largely invisible to us and, as such, have been unexplored and unappreciated. This theory also discusses how the evolution of these four functions led from nonlinguistic biological awareness to sophisticated human consciousness and eventually to the duality of mind and body.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Origin of Consciousness and the Mind-Body Problem is a groundbreaking book, that is both incisive and highly readable. Having been a half century in the making, it presents a profoundly new paradigm. Besides explaining how language created consciousness, it describes how the Scientific Revolution led to the mind-body problem. This problem is about how our mind which represents our subjective, seemingly nonphysical experiences can be logically connected to our objective, physical body. In other words, how the physical body can respond to instructions given to it by a nonphysical mind. This book also explains the origin of our personal self, as well as how our internal dialogues created self-awareness. As such, it will enlighten the reader on issues that have long perplexed the world's best thinkers. 158 pp. Englisch. Seller Inventory # 9780964239067
