As part of its twentieth anniversary celebration, the Student Press Law Center published a new edition of its book Law of the Student Press. The new book, which, at 269 pages, is almost three times as long as the original edition, is divided into two sections: student press freedom and a press law handbook. While the book is extensively footnoted, the authors have intentionally avoided complicated "legal-ese" and attempted to bring the law to life for students and educators. Included are examples of common problems handled by the SPLC legal staff and practical suggestions for avoiding trouble. The book's 19 chapters include: High School Press Freedom, College Press Freedom, Private School Press Freedom, The "Underground" Press, Fighting Censorship, The Electronic Media, The Rights of Advisers, Defamation, Liability for the Student Press, Copyright Law, Freedom of Information Law and Advertising and Business Concerns.

For over 20 years, the nonprofit Student Press Law Center has provided free legal help to student journalists across the country. Their legal staff knows the answers to the questions the student media ask the most. The Law of the Student Press is the only comprehensive resource available that addresses the unique legal problems faced by student publication staffs and their advisers.

What They're Saying About Law of the Student Press, 2nd. edition:

"Law of the Student Press is a crucially important book for the present - and the future." - Nat Hentoff Author and nationally syndicated columnist New York, NY

"The book is comprehensive and excellent....For all those involved or interested in student press issues - student journalists, advisers, school administrators, teachers, lawyers, scholars, and concerned citizens - this book is indispensable." - Elliot M. Mincberg Executive Vice President and Legal Director People for the American Way Washington, DC

"The new Law of the Student Press is a must for publications advisers and their staffs. In this post-Hazelwood era, the only way students can protect their free expression rights is to know clearly what they are, and this new edition does just that. The SPLC is once again invaluable to anyone involved with the scholastic press." - Candace Perkins President, Journalism Education Association Washington, DC

"I just finished teaching a unit on Rights and Responsibilities to my Beginning Journalism Class. How I wish I had had a copy of the book beforehand. It will be an invaluable resource in the future. The book is a must...." - H.L. Hall 1982 Dow Jones National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year Kirkwood High School, Kirkwood, MO

"This thorough handbook, written with clarity and verve, can help journalists to avoid legal pitfalls and gain access to information...[while providing them] with tools to fight for a free press and a free society." - Dwight Teeter Co-author, Law of Mass Communications Dean, College of Communications University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN

"The Student Press Law Center has turned on the bright lights of today's legal understanding for high school and college student publications advisers and student staff members with its second edition of Law of the Student Press....The writing style has avoided the legalistic morass of many press law books so that students can read it with understanding. The content is thorough and superbly reliable." - Louis E. Ingelhart Professor Emeritus of Journalism and Director Emeritus of Student Publications Ball State University, Muncie, IN

"Had such a publication existed when I was a student journalist it would have kept me (1) informed on matters I needed to know and (2) out of a hell of a lot of trouble." - John Seigenthaler Chairman The Freedom Forum First Amendment Center Nashville, TN

From the Publisher:
The second edition of Law of the Student Press answers the questions you - the student journalist and student journalism adviser - ask the most. Answers that you will often find nowhere else. For example:

Can I print the names of minors? Can I use a song title as the theme for our yearbook without violating federal copyright laws? Is my school liable for what I publish in the student newspaper? What federal law requires all colleges to release information about crimes that occur on their campuses? Does an adviser have the right to disobey an order by school administrators to censor a student publication? What are the six steps for fighting censorship? Who "controls" the programming on a student-run radio station? Do school officials have the right to read my "underground" newspaper prior to distribution? I attend a private school. What can I do if I'm censored? Where can I find out the salary of my public and private school principal or president? Are teachers "public figures" for purposes of libel law? Do I have the right to reject an ad submitted to my student publication? Can a minor consent to an invasion of privacy? Can a school official force me to divulge the identity of a confidential source? And many, many more...
