Gr. 5^-9. Based on the experiences of Carter's father and reading like a novel, this coming-of-age narrative recounts the true story of 15-year-old Henry, who participated in a winter cattle drive from Raymond, Alberta, to Sweetwater, Montana, in 1923. When a severe drought and an early winter leave prairie grasses too short to feed the stock through the winter, local ranchers decide to thin the herds and cut their losses. Nine men and Henry accompany nearly 3,000 head of cattle through blizzards and cold to Sweetwater, where Henry and three others continue with the herd by rail to the Chicago stockyards. The contrasts between life in the big city and on the ranch do not escape Henry's notice, and he returns home both enlightened and matured by his travels. Adventure enthusiasts will appreciate the author's attention to characters and local color. Kay Weisman
