Synopsis

This is more than a story about sailing. It is a true romance of a newlywed couple's adjustment to life at sea and each other. Through 47 countries and 45,000 miles, we share their terror of a near dismasting and their delight of exploring new cultures. Sometimes witty and sometimes setting your pulse racing, what enlivens this true narrative is that the author freely shares her emotions and opinions from a personal point of view. She turns what could have easily been a travelogue into a tale of adventure, sometimes changing the names to protect the guilty!

From the Back Cover

Ever dream of sailing around the world? That was not Alicia's plan when she wrote a letter to God asking for the "Man of her Dreams". She didn't know that her saucy request to "do a little sailing" would be granted. But Bill arrived complete with something of which dreams are made...a honeymoon that lasted seven years circumnavigating the globe. Unprepared for the cruising life but determined to cultivate an enthusiasm for sailing, she takes us on a passage from "a fear of the unknown" to "a sudden surge of pride". This is more than a story about sailing. It is a true romance of a newlywed couple's adjustment to life at sea and each other. Through 47 different countries and 45,000 miles, we share their terror of a near dismasting and their delight of exploring new cultures. In her easy, conversational style, Alicia describes how they survived the elements when there was nowhere to hide. Sometimes witty and sometimes setting your pulse racing, what enlivens this true narrative is that Alicia freely shares her emotions and opinions from a personal point of view. She turns what could have easily been a travelogue into a tale of adventure, sometimes changing the names to protect the guilty! Whether you are an old salt or an uninitiated armchair sailor, the adventurous romantic in you will enjoy reading about this bride's passage from reluctant first mate to a fully adjusted, enthusiastic sailor.

We shared watch with four hours on and four hours off, never able to get a full night's sleep the entire time. Hardly a word was spoken between us. Was this my husband's fantasy trip? By the eighth day the seas still weren't calm. I'd had enough and was ready to jump overboard. I plopped my weary body on the settee. Partly sitting and partly prone, chin on my chest. Bill assumed a similar position across from me. Raising my head slowly, I looked him in the eyes. Taking a deep breath, I thought, "This is unbearable. How can I tell him I can't go on? Will he ever forgive me?" As every mutinous thought raced through my mind, Bill returned my gaze. Slowly, he started shaking his head from side to side. And out of his mouth came the words I longed to hear, "I don't like this. We'll quit when we get to St. Thomas." With amazing refinement, I was able to say quietly "Okay." In my heart, I wanted to jump up and scream "Hallelujah!".
