I am pleased with the comments from Vernon Heppe's fellow soldiers. His platoon Sgt. for all the battles was Arthur H. Nebe. In a 1997 letter he states, "Vernon's book is accurate. We saw these things happen with our own eyes and we all experienced the same dangers." Mr. Nebe goes on to say, "The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) was a highly valued infantry weapon during WW II. It took a special type of soldier to make this weapon valuable and effective and Vernon was that type of soldier."
