In this book, Congressman Eni Faleomavaega sets the intellectual and legislative agenda on Pacific issues for the next decade. As a delegate from American Samoa, he naturally focuses on the Pacific Island issues, but demonstrates considerable knowledge in Asian security and trade concerns. The author navigates a middle ground between those who see evil in everything that the U.S. does and the Pollyannas that are incapable of seeing any wrong. Faleomavaega has probably done more than any U.S. Congressman to improve the lot of people throughout the Pacific Island region, and to facilitate a deeper and more mutually beneficial relationship with the United States. In addition to superb service to his electorate (as shown by the fact that he has been re-elected four times in a row and still earns more than double the votes of his nearest rival), he has taken many initiatives for the Pacific Islands region as a whole.
The book outlines ways in which relations between the United States and the Pacific can be improved to mutual advantage and calls for deeper understanding! of the exceedingly diverse cultures and socio-political systems of this vast region.

About the Author
Eni F. H. Faleomavaega is Member of Congress, Democrat - American Samoa. He was born in American Samoa to Eni and Taualai Hunkin of the village of Vailoatai. Faleomavaega holds the matai title, Faleomavaega of the Faiivae Family of Leone, American Samoa. He and his wife, Hinanui Bambridge Cave of Papeete, Tahiti have five children.
Faleomavaega attended Vailoatai and Laie Elementary Schools, and in 1962 received his diploma from Kahuku High school in Hawaii. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science/History from Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah in 1966; a Juris Doctor from the University of Houston Law School in 1972; and a Master of Law from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973.
His public service include American Samoa Representative to the U.S. Congress (1989-present) Lieutenant Governor of American Samoa (1985-1988) Deputy Attorney General of American Samoa (1981-1984) Staff Counsel to House of Representative Committee on Interior and Insular AFfairs (1975-1981)and Administrative Assistant to Paramount Chief A. U. Fuimaono - American Samoa's first elected Representative to Washington D.C. (1973-1975). Faleomavaega also served in the United States Army; Honorable Discharge 1966-1969, Vietnam Veteran United States Army Reserve; Captain, U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps.
