An ardent sailing enthusiast, he has cruised the Great Lakes extensively. He has sailed winners in class boats and in off-shore competition, including both the Port Huron-to-Mackinac and Chicago-to-Mackinac sailing classics.
He and his wife, the late Harriet Wolfs Johnston, have a son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Here is a tale of life on the Great Lakes, in particular along the western shore of Lake Michigan, and engaging weave of fact and fiction during the early rough and rowdy shipping era. Echoes provides readers with a well written, well researched novel, complete with maps, which are so instructive and helpful in clarifying a sense of place, especially the arrangement of the five Great Lakes - which can often confuse. This engaging historical novel well deserves a place in our own home libraries." -- Harbor Springs, Michigan Harbor Light, July 3-9, 1996, Kevin O'Neill, publisher and editor.
"Johnston's The Echoes Of L'Arbre Croche is a fresh approach to the popular historical novel and its sweep offers something for almost anyone who loves the species. Echoes blends fact and fiction with myriad details of life along the western shore of Lake Michigan in the early years of the 20th century. As with all period novels, a strong sense of place and time is used here to the reader's advantage." -- Book Review by Marilyn Chenault, Vero Beach Press-Journal, May 19, 1996.
"The Echoes of L'Arbre Croche opens up new territory in the oftentimes confining genre of historical novel. The setting is Lake Michigan in the early 20th century, during the Great Lakes shipping industry's most robust, and hazardous, period.
The author throws everything into the pot - a struggle to establish shipping lanes on these inland oceans, the earliest settlements, agricultural growth, Indian lore, the butchering of Michigan's forests, and the inevitable love triangle. And the result is a stew with enough bite to leave one asking for more." -- Small Press, March/April, 1996
The Echoes Of L'arbre Croche is a superb tale of mystery, intrigue and romance against the backdrop of a fascinating history of the Great Lakes in the early part of this century. Benjamin Corver suddenly disappears. Constance Sherrill feels strangely responsible for what may have happened. Alan Conrad is searching for his unknown benefactor and becomes swept up in a maelstrom of mystery and intrigue. When a ship sinks off Beaver island in Lake Michigan, the intertwining lives of the characters unlock the mystery of the disappearance of another ship 20 years earlier. The Echoes Of L'arbre Croche is a gripping, page-turner of a novel and a splendid introduction to the work of a new and talented author. -- Midwest Book Review
