About the Author:

A Torah-observant Jew and a practicing general surgeon, Dr. Flancbaum is currently Chief of the Division of Bariatric Surgery at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and a nationally recognized authority on the surgical treatment of obesity.

Prior to joining St Luke's-Roosevelt, Dr. Flancbaum served on the faculties of The Ohio State University, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers University. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York-Downstate Medical Center and completed his surgical training at the University of Illinois in Chicago and the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Flancbaum is board certified in General Surgery, Surgical Critical Care and Nutrition Support, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM) and the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP) and over 25 professional societies. He lectures extensively on a wide array of topics and has published over 100 scientific articles and book chapters. Dr. Flancbaum is also the co-author of a new book on weight loss surgery for lay people entitled: Weight Loss Surgery: The Complete Guide to Gastric Bypass and Other Procedures.
