North Country Publishing made a decision to re-issue this small classic book after many inquiries about the volume, first published by Avery Studios in 1976. The size and growth of the interest in traditional archery - wood bows and arrows with natural fletching - has been remarkable. There are traditional archery clubs and magazines devoted only to this part of the archery field. The book has not been revised for re-issue, so it forms a true reflection of the early years of traditional archery and the early experiences of the author.
I had no intention of writing a how-to-do-it volume about archery and bow hunting. My purpose was to try to put some fun back into the sport by relating a series of shooting and hunting adventures which portray the basic simplicity and amusement of archery. Alas, however, college professor that I am, it was impossible to resist teaching from time to time and the reader will find mini-lectures on shooting and some hunting tips sprinkled throughout the book. I promise not to give final exams. I note a substantial tidal wave of bow and arrow enthusiasts flowing back to more traditional forms of archery. Discouraged by the complicated gadgetry promoted in the past two decades, hunters and target shooters are returning to the roots of their sport. Long bows and recurves thought by some to be endangered or rare items are again being lovingly made and used.
This slim First Edition volume, originally published in 1976 and re-released in October 1998 welcomes all of the archers back. Here you will find the process of instinctive shooting described in simple terms: Keep your eyes both of them riveted on the target. Concentrate on an isolated spot just like a pitcher focuses on the strike zone or the specific spot in the strike zone where he intends to hurl the ball.
With Stick and String also includes a philosophy of hunting, adventures in the field and sources of more information. With Stick and String was written for those who seek information about traditional forms of archery and way to simplify the process of shooting a bow, along with some fun with a bow in hand.
