Reviews

This practical guide to the organization and execution of campaigns will be a welcome handbook for inexperienced candidates as well as for those supporting various ballot measures and initiatives. Currently serving her second term as mayor of Ashland, Oregon, Golden has successfully managed a variety of campaigns by applying simple yet basic organizational techniques to the campaign process. Among the elements she considers are setting up a campaign team, working with volunteers, preparing campaign brochures and lawn signs, fund-raising, precinct analysis, canvassing, getting out the vote (and avoiding activating a "negative" vote), using direct mail, and dealing effectively with the media. Golden's book is both well organized and well illustrated with sample campaign brochures, flowcharts, and an appendix of forms for photocopying. Her handbook will make an extremely useful addition to any community library collection.?Laurie Bartolini, Legislative Research, Springfield, Ill.
