When I was doing research for my Master's thesis in Musicology, I was looking for an obscure woman composer to "discover." Hildegard of Bingen caught my attention immediately. Her music is unique. It is exciting, imaginative, innovative--and it is the largest amount of surviving medieval music from any single composer. So often in history, when a woman did something outside of the ordinary, she worked in obscurity, and her work might not be recognized or valued until well after her death. In contrast to this all-too-frequent scenario, Hildegard of Bingen was a woman who had been a composer nine hundred years ago AND was well-known and admired during her lifetime. Hildegard was not obscure enough for my purposes, so I chose someone else for my thesis, but I thought, wow, what a life! She was so incredibly gifted and inspiring that I knew I had to write about her.
Carol Reed-Jones is a former music teacher who now writes children's books full time. She is a member of the International Society of Hildegard von Bingen Studies, a group dedicated to the study of Hildegard's life and works. Carol has a Master's degree in Musicology, and is the author of Salmon Stream and The Tree in the Ancient Forest, two nature picture books for children. When she isn't doing school author visits throughout North America (and soon, the rest of the world), she can be found hiking, playing in a marimba ensemble, or in front of her computer in Bellingham, Washington, researching topics for new books.
