Sexual harassment on a college campus is the inciting incident in this somewhat lethargic mystery, but death follows right on its heels. The lethargy is due in large part to the central character, English professor Jeremy Greystone, who must decide whether to come out of his emotional shell long enough to investigate what may have been suicide--or may have been murder.
When a young woman in one of his classes suggests that she is being harassed and stalked by one of his colleagues, Greystone reluctantly agrees to try to help her. But then she dies, and his vague feeling of responsibility leads him to mount his own investigation into the circumstances. Meanwhile, his lover is pressing him to make a commitment to her, and his niece, recently arrived in town, is also making demands on his time. The pace is slow, the mystery of who killed the student merely sputters to a conclusion, and Greystone is not particularly likable. His stodginess and shilly-shallying get on the reader's nerves, and his belated realization that he's been a fool to throw away his last chance at happiness felt pasted on to the ending. But Jody Heymann's female characters are much livelier and more forcefully drawn. Perhaps in her next mystery, she'll choose one as the protagonist. --Jane Adams
