The New Weibull Handbook Student’s Version is largely extracted from The New Weibull Handbook covering the basic material for reliability and statistical analysis of life data. The chapter numbers and appendixes have the same designation as in The New Weibull Handbook. It is hoped the student’s handbook with the student’s software will provide an affordable package for reliability and statistics courses students and novices everywhere. To make the Handbook more readable, all heavy mathematics will be found in the appendixes. The format includes much white space for notes and calculations. Case studies are employed to present the methodology. The package includes basic software to do Weibull analysis and predict future failures and malfunctions. Topics covered include: 1. An overview of life data analysis 2. The statistics of Weibull analysis 3. How to make Weibull plots, step-by-step 4. Median Rank Plotting Positions and regressions solutions 5. Interpretation of Weibull plot patterns 6. Interpreting the Weibull parameters 7. Goodness of fit 8. How to make Weibull Probability Paper 9. Censored or suspended data 10. Three parameter Weibulls for origin shifts 11. Forecasting failures in future months and years 12. Weibayes, the one parameter Weibull, for improved accuracy 13. Test substantiation of new products with minimum cost 14. Confidence intervals to measure the statistical uncertainties 15. Case studies illustrating all of the above WinSMITH Weibull Student’s software (WSWS) is included to reduce the drudgery of hand calculations and produce probability plots for the most useful distributions. It is similarly extracted from the SuperSMITH WinSMITH Weibull software thanks to Wes Fulton. A PowerPoint presentation is included on the CD to introduce the software features with case studies: 1. Median Rank Regression and Maximum Likelihood Solutions 2. Probability Plots for Weibull 1, 2 and 3 parameter solutions 3. Probability Plots for Normal, Log Normal and Gumbel Extreme Value Solutions 4. Up to 60 failures and/or suspensions 5. Monte Carlo Sampling from the distributions listed above using either random or precise sampling 6. Confidence Intervals based on the Beta-Binomial solution 7. Weibayes analysis (1 parameter Weibull) 8. Failure forecasting for months and years into the future. 9. The Analysis Report option listing exact values from the plot line and confidence bounds as well as goodness of fit metrics and confidence bounds for parameters. See below. The Student Version of The New Weibull Handbook consists of 134 pages of material with a wire spiral binding to allow it to be opened flat for classwork. The pricing is specifically reduced to make it available for students on university campuses. Single copies are $75.00.

Robert B. Abernethy is known world wide for his expertise in Weibull analysis. He has presented his Weibull Workshop in Australia, China, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden, Israel, & Great Britain, as well as Canada and the U.S.A. Retired from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, he has numerous awards from SAE, ASME, AIAA, and ISA for his development of advanced Weibull technology during the last thirty years including the Weibayes method, failure forecasting, & the Weibull substantiation test designs. He is a fellow of SAE, ASME, ASQ, and the Royal Statistical Society, and an associate fellow of AIAA. He was awarded the 1988 ASME Gold Medal. SAE’s G11 Division on Reliability was founded and chaired by Dr. Abernethy as well as the SAE E33 Committee on Aircraft Performance. The patents on the J58 engine that powers the world’s fastest airplane, the SR-71 Blackbird, and the afterburner control on the F100 engine used in the F15 and F16 fighters are in his name. He was a Navy Scholar as well as a Fulbright Scholar to Great Britain.
This text will be a significant addition to my courses in reliability and statistics, an introduction to life data analysis. --James E. Breneman Adjunct Professor, University of Hartford
