My husband Tyrell, my friends and I are independent travelers who like to get the most for our money. Our needs are quite basic when it comes to accommodations: Italian, clean, inexpensive, bathroom and/or showers in the room (my husband demands this feature) and centrally located in a safe area. For us, the sole purpose of a hotel room is to provide a safe place to sleep while we enjoy our day.

We have never made hotel reservations when we traveled, we like the spontaneity and freedom of not being committed to a particular schedule, but not if it ends up costing us more money and time. Thus, the reason for this book. In our years of traveling and "winging" it in Italy, we have put together a list of hotels (albergo means hotel and pensiones are now called hotels) that can be rented for an all-inclusive rate between $40.00 and $75.00 a night for double occupancy (depending on the exchange rate). This means you can spend your money on the important things such as the attractions, food, shopping and more food!!!!!

What this book will not do is ... Tell you about Italy, when to go, how to get there, what sites to see and u where to eat, that is what your favorite travel guide does. Also, you will not find information regarding youth hostels, dormitories, student accommodations, convents and camping sites.

What this book will do is allow you the freedom of not making reservations until you get to Italy, arm you with plenty of choices, information and the ability to barter with the hotels. It lists hotels in Italy that are available for an inclusive rate of $40.00 to $75.00 a night for double occupancy (including service and value-added tax). However, to avoid any misunderstandings, always confirm the rate and what it includes at the time you check into the hotel. Please use the extra space provided under each hotel to record the name of the person you spoke with and what was discussed on the phone.

The hotels listed in this book meet Tyrell's, my traveling friends and my requirements as listed in the introduction. Hotels are listed alphabetically by name with street (mailing) address, phone number and/or fax number along with a brief description of the hotel. Single = 1 person; Double = 2 people; Triple = 3 people; Quad = 4 people.

Hotel hoppers traveling on a shoestring should check out this series of guides to affordable lodging in major destinations. Accommodations listed in these books range in price from $40-$90. All three books also provide tips on packing, time, language and events with a few extra pages for note-taking. The handy fax form seems as if it would be extremely useful to people booking their own accommodations. A bit congested in terms of layout and therefore a little difficult to access, these first edition guides still appear o be extraordinarily useful.
