Synopsis
Terry Richardson's provacative photographs have promoted brands such as Gucci and Sisley, appeared in magazines and art books, and been exhibited in galleries around the world. This books show the origins of his influential aesthetic--it is a collection of photos he made of himself and his friends in 1983 when he was a punk rock kid in Southern California.

About the Author
Richardson has had previous one man shows at Shine Gallery, London; Gallery Emanuel Perriton, Paris; Parco Gallery, Japan; and Alleged Gallery and Deitch Projects in New York City. His first book, Hysteric Glamour, appeared in 1998; followed by Son of Bob, 1999; Feared by Men Desired by Women, 2000; Too Much, 2001; Terryworld and Kibosh, both 2004. He lives and works in New York City.

Any way you add it up it amounts to the same thing: absolutely nothing. We're born. We die. In between there's school and work. When you are a teenager that's an adult truth you learn with your skin, whether you ink, scab or score it. And these kids, Richardson and his mates, denizens of Ojai, California's youth scene ca. early nineteen eighties, make the best of these existential bookends by raging with the machinery of their choice: music fueled by electric guitars, drum kits, juiced amps, alcohol and attitude. In the primitive mosh pits of the SSA (Signal Street Alcoholics, Richardson's crew) there's nothing but life, even if it's spinning, in some cases, headlong into oblivion. Or boredom. Kids with an attitude going anywhere fast: a new generation of holy goofs and angry outsiders that appear to parents merely as teenagers in trouble. But from the perspective of rock-n-roll high school, the only perspective that counts, it's an age when nothing matters and everything makes a difference. When there is such a thing as no future and plenty of time to figure it out, fuck it up or wait for it to happen: when you are styling your hair and your identity to avoid merely going with the flow. Richardson's photographs remind you that everybody was trying to be unique and looking remarkably similar. But that was the point of this the rebel cry: to be you and nobody else, but to do it in a way that gathered simpatico with like haircuts and frayed t-shirts into basements to strike similar chords.
