Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt called the C&O Canal National Historical Park, "our version of Central Park, only better." Sometimes, our version seems just as populated as Manhattan's patch of greenery. But, it's possible to escape the crowds. Eighty percent of the more than three million annual visits are to one small area of the park: a 15-mile stretch of the towpath that extends from Georgetown to Great Falls. The towpath continues for another 170 miles to the canal's terminus in Cumberland, Maryland.

Canal Days Festival at Williamsport, a 2-day celebration of the small town's canal heritage. Or show up at the American Legion Hall for an all-you-can-eat oyster feed.
