Review:
The overly saturated hard-boiled crime fiction genre gets a sharp, fresh and witty newcomer in K.j.a. Wishnia's story Flat Rate. The central character is ex-cop Filomena Buscarsela, an edgy Ecuadorian cab driver who can't shake her NYPD detective instincts. As a result, this streetwise, well-educated woman gets caught up in a drug dealing murder case. Amidst the backdrop of a violent taxi strike and freezing temperatures, Filomena struts her sardonic stuff and stays one step ahead of her corrupt peers to solve the case in her own unique way. In Lead and Leather, Filomena's story continues with an Ecuadorian beach vacation that turns into police work when a dead body shows up on the scene. Soon enough, Filomena is caught up in the act and introduced to a leather-clad bimbo and possible suspect. She solves the case and never even changes out of her wet nylon bathing suit. The two other shorter stories that appear in the book, Epistemic Disease and The Rest, run a slightly different course. The first is an urban thriller with a downtown New York City cyberpunk scene; while the latter chronicles the on-line life of a young Latina during a strange kind of technological revolution with an often unintelligible language all its own. Though each story has underlying political, feminist and cultural messages, they don't exactly hit the reader head on but rather is more subtly woven into the text.
