A new, funny, how-to-cartoon book filled with great lessons. Duane Barnhart has expanded his cartooning career from national magazine cartoons, newspaper syndication, and book illustration to include the classroom as an artist-in-residence. He now brings his successful cartooning lessons to everyone in Duane Barnhart's Cartooning Basics. The book carries many endorsements from teachers, parents, professional cartoonists, and most importantly, KIDS. Charles M. Schulz, Creator of Peanuts, wrote the foreword, and initial response indicates the book will become a standard reference in cartooning and teaching.

Duane Barnhart's cartoons have been published in The Saturday Evening Post, MPLS-ST. PAUL Magazine and many other regional and nation magazines. During the 1980's, Barnhart drew a nationally syndicated cartoon strip called Can You Solve The Mystery?. His editorial cartoons and illustrations have won awards on both local and national levels. Barnhart has illustrated many children's books, and has drawn thousands of advertising and promotional cartoons for scores of businesses and publishers. Currently, Barnhart spends much of his time teaching his successful cartooning techniques to thousands of students in schools, colleges, and art centers throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin as an artist-in-residence. Barnhart has been chosen to be a Roster Artist for both the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Duluth, Minnesota, Depot Outreach Program. In addition to his teaching, Barnhart currently draws cartoon features for magazines and does illustration for books and advertising when time allows. Barnhart lives with his family in White Bear Lake, Minnesota.
"Every year, the day Duane arrives to teach cartooning stands out easily as the children's (as well as my) favorite day! The kids are on the edge of their seats as he brings his wonderful cartoons to life. Now, with a copy of this fabulous book, the kids can enjoy that "edge-of-their-seatness" whenever they please." Karen Schirmer, Third Grade Teacher, Riverside Elementary School, Brainerd, Minnesota
"Very inspiring and educational. Kids enjoy following a book like yours with a character that is cute and simple. I liked the idea for the name 'Number 2.'" Megan Brown, age 10, Author of The Rainbow Burbles and The Christmas Burbles
"If you or someone you know wants to get started cartooning, buy this book! Duane Barnhart has taken his years of experience teaching cartooning to school age students and constructed a book which is at once; easy to understand, interesting to look at and delivers solid, step-by-step instruction for the beginning cartoonist." Jerry VanAmerongen, Creator of The Neighborhood and Ballard Street comic strips
"Duane Barnhart has written an entertaining and humorous book filled with easy to follow suggestions that assure that even beginners - young and old - can produce successful cartoons. My middle school students loved using the techniques and were getting outstanding illustrations for original stories, cartoons on current events, program covers, greeting cards and just plain fun!" Katharine Churchill, High Potential Resource Teacher, Chippewa Middle School, Moundsview, Minnesota Adjunct Professor of Art Education, Bethel College and Hamline University, St. Paul, Minnesota
"This book is the most user friendly, and comprehensive beginning cartooning book that I have seen. The funny narrative draws anybody of any age in, and leads them in an appealing way to draw successful cartoon characters. As an artist, and home schooling mom of three sons, I appreciate the clarity and logical way that the material is presented. My seven year old son reads it everyday during breakfast!" Julia Suits, Portrait/Caricaturist, Creators Syndicate and home schooling mother of three.
These are two of the most comprehensive and entertaining cartooning books available. Duane Barnhart, a highly successful teacher, syndicated cartoonist, and illustrator, provides interesting bits on cartoon history and step-by-step lessons on human characters, animals, and imaginary beings. The book attempts to engage the student by having cartoon characters do the teaching. This is alternately whimsical and tedious. Hall's book manages to pack far more material in a cleaner format, while still making the reader laugh on every page. Thus, one learns that of 6000 submissions to King Features Syndicate, only three are accepted, and one learns how to make snacks while preparing one of those submissions. Two fine books, but Hall has the edge.
