Synopsis

This is an inspiring memoir of the author's near-fatal battle with anorexia and bulimia, and how she was able to emerge victorious 25 years later. Her incredible, thought-provoking journey takes you far beyond the eating disorder symptoms and into the obsessive mindset in a way that only someone who has been there can. But the story doesn't end there; it continues straight down the road of recovery proving that victory is possible no matter how many years you have struggled.

From Chapter 1: I turned on the light in the tiny, hospital bathroom, walked over to the sink and looked down into the white porcelain basin, too afraid to look in the mirror. Too afraid to see what I had done . . . of my own free will. I raised my eyes, slowly, and stared into my face. Oh God, my face! Gaunt, sunken-in eyes. Hollow cheeks; scrawny chicken-neck. Parched yellowish skin that called out for hydration, for nutrition . . . for food. How had this happened? What monster had I become? Okay, I'm scared. I'm scared because it's not getting any better. This merry-go-round won't slow down, or let me get off. I wish I could go back to the beginning and start over. But I can't. And I can't stop. Not until I'm thin. Not until my breastbone rests on my backbone, will I be assured that all is safe . . . that I am thin.
