Eddie Phelps is a thirteen-year-old hockey player with no slap shot and then one day, walking home from school he takes a shot at a horse chestunut lying on the sidewalk and drives it through a classmate's window. That begins a strange transformation as Eddie discovers that he is descended from a long line of Druid healers. He discovers powers he never knew he had. He discovers that he can hear what the trees are saying. He discovers that he has the power to heal even the most desperate of injuries and diseases. In the process he also discovers that having such extraordinary powers may not be very easy to live with, no matter how great a slap shot you develop.

Boys are not reading because the books that are out there don't have anything to do with being a boy. This is the first in a series of books designed to get those boys to read. The author, Robert Holland, has written essays for Audubon, Yankee, New England Monthly, The Christian Science Monitor, and Connecticut Magazine. His first novel, The Hunter, was published by Stein & Day and then published in France, Germany, and the UK. He studied under Rex Warner at the University of Connecticut and Stephen Minot at Trinity College.
