"Tracking the Charlatans" refutes the ideologically driven slander aimed at the mainstream environmental movement's activities and concerns. These anti-environmental assaults, which have recently received some extensive national media exposure, malign by extension the integrity of my own newspaper commentary during the past two-and-a-half decades. What makes these verbal broadsides against the environmental movement particularly unconscionable is that they tend to downplay threats to the future quality of our daily lives. A scientific consensus maintains that the threats can be controlled -- if not eliminate -- provided they are taken seriously and treated expeditiously. Should they be neglected, however, they could gather sufficient momentum to produce some nasty, irreversible changes in our biological life support system.
