Most people today, whether in business or not, want to be the best leader they can become. In the effort to be the best they have to learn how to gain the most out of themselves and those on their team. All of us have worked hard to obtain positions of leadership. The objective is success in this role. We have obtained these positions most often because of individual contributions, but now are expected to succeed through others. We are not only challenged to get everyone in the team involved, but focused on an objective of the organization. We have to learn how to capture the imagination of others. The aspirations of individuals to be thought of as leaders takes them higher on the satisfaction of needs hierarchy. When we are individual contributors we gain satisfaction from our personal results. In some situations we are given recognition by others, but often it is the self satisfaction of a job well done that provides our ego gratification. Good leaders are in a situation where their gratification comes from others growing and performing to the best of their abilities. This is more difficult to achieve and more rewarding as a result. Ego gratification and ultimately self actualization are the rewards to those who are quality leaders. Leaders are seen as the winners in the world.

Leaders today and in the future will determine how our society views leadership. There has been no other time in U.S. history when the role of the leader has been questioned so much. People wonder about the need for ethics, personal sacrifice and technical capability in their leaders. As an individual leader how we respond to these questions sets the stage not only for our generation, but future ones to come. These are choices to be made and we can do it in a conscious way.
