Three O'clock in the morning at a capital murder scene is neither the time nor the place to begin the planning and development of a homicide crime scene team. Nor is this the time and place to begin the training of a crime scene investigation "trainee." This is, however, exactly what happened in the O.J. Simpson case, which, coupled with the indifferent attitudes of the lead detectives toward the physical evidence, led ineluctably to the considerable bungling of the crime scene investigations, and, in this author's opinion, was the primary cause for the acquittal of the defendant in the case. (Chapter Two)
Was blood placed on the sock? The defense suggested that the finding of EDTA on the socks was "proof" that the socks were planted. The fact that the EDTA levels in the sock bloodstains were so far below the level which would have been found if the bloodstains on the socks were "planted" actually proved the opposite hypothesis. If the blood on the socks had been planted from a vial containing EDTA as and anti-coagulant, the EDTA levels in the bloodstains would have been at least several hundred time higher than the level found in the sock bloodstains. (Chapter Seven)
