About the Author

Mark and Elaine Smith built their own home in 1997 after reading the few books available on the subject of owner-building. They surprised themselves by saving $145,000 over the estimate of a general contractor. They decided to provide the tools necessary for anyone to save by owner-building. Mr. Smith is a former commercial construction industry executive with an MBA from Harvard University, and Ms. Smith is a retired school librarian with a Masters degree in library science.
