Willie McBee gets a mysterious computer disc that takes him into his computer, where Evelyn the astronaut, heroine of a book his mother read to him as a younger child, takes him on a tour of the World Wide Web

Willie & the World Wide Web is designed so that children of varying age levels-ranging from older children who are computer literate to younger children who have had no experience with the Web-can derive different levels of meaning from the narrative. The book is designed in classic picture book format, with pages of text alternating with pages featuring color illustrations.
On one level, the book is a colorful high-tech adventure story. Willie's journey through the Internet's World Wide Web entertains, while the story's underlying concepts provide young children with a basic understanding of how the Web works.
On another level, the story allows older children to experience an information age fable. Children can compare and contrast old and modern technologies, the frontiers of the technological world and our physical world, and the timeless power of the book with the new forms of digital creativity. Other issues such as the value of moderation in this new age emerge as Willie's story unfolds. Some parents may find that a brief overview of the World Wide Web increases a child's understanding and enjoyment of the book. The book's glossary includes a brief overview of the Web and as well as commonly used computer and Internet terms.
Willie McBee loves to play computer games. Willie's parents, however, think this interest has begun to take over his life. On his birthday, Willie finds a mysterious present. This present allows him to magically enter his computer, fly through the Internet, and explore the World Wide Web.
Thus begins an extraordinary adventure. Willie's wild ride through the Web allows him to experience the opportunities, wonders and complexities of this digital frontier. In the end, Willie discovers an old friend and is left enlightened by the remarkable voyage.
Willie & the World Wide Web is as entertaining as it is meaningful for children of the information age. The book's evocative full-color paintings capture the sense of childhood exploration, wonder and discovery that is at the heart of Willie's journey. The book's narrative-together with the list of Internet terms included in the book's glossary-may be used to provide young readers with an introduction to the basic concepts of the World Wide Web.
