Places of Picasso is a guide to almost 300 sites in over forty cities and towns in Spain and France that are related to the life and work of one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century.
These range from the house of his birth in Mlaga to the site of his grave in the garden of a 16th-century Provenal chteau. Along the way are descriptions of childhood homes; artistic gathering places of his youth; studios in Barcelona, Paris and many locations in southern France; a series of residences ranging from humble to affluent; and a number of museums devoted solely to Picasso including an unusual one containing objects and gifts collected by his personal barber.
Many of the entries contain colorful anecdotes from the fascinating life of this artistic giant who had two wives and innumerable mistresses during his more than ninety-one years.
There are over sixty photographs taken by the authors of sites as they look today as well as helpful directions for accessing those off the beaten path.
For those interested in Picasso's life the book can serve as an informative reference source even without traveling to see the places firsthand.
We, Marilyn and Ray Zolton, grew up in New Jersey, within view of the New York City skyline. High-school sweethearts, we married in 1960 and started a family. In 1963, after Ray received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT), we moved to Wilmington, Delaware. Here he got an M. S. in Organic Chemistry in 1967, while working at DuPont Corp. While living in Delaware, Marilyn gave birth to our third child and began attending evening courses at University of Delaware.
In 1968, the family moved to West Lafayette, Indiana, where Ray worked on his doctorate in biochemistry while Marilyn pursued her B. A. degree in history at Purdue University. She received this degree, Summa cum Laud, in 1971 and continued on to complete an M. A. in American Studies the following year, when Ray received his Ph. D. The family moved to Michigan where Ray did research at Wayne State University Medical School and Marilyn attended Wayne State University Graduate School of Education for a teaching certificate. She then worked as a substitute teacher in Detroit and taught evening courses in history and political science at Detroit College of Business in Dearborn. In 1974 the family moved back to our home state of New Jersey where Ray pursued a research career in the pharmaceutical industry. Marilyn acquired a Masters degree in Library Service at Rutgers University and then worked as a professional librarian.
During our working years we developed a love for European travel and spent as much time as possible pursuing this interest. We got the idea for our books when traveling to Europe on two- or three-week vacations. At that time we greatly enjoyed seeing sites related to the lives of great people whose writing or art we admired. We found these places haphazardly in various guidebooks, and were disappointed that no specific guide was available to access these sites by person. We sifted through country guides and tourist-office information, city by city; even this time-consuming effort left us with very incomplete results. When we retired (in our late forties) we decided to focus future trips on researching a guide that would have met our earlier needs. We were convinced that we were not the only people interested in such sites and that such a reference book would satisfy a specific need for scholars and others planning a European trip, especially if their time was limited. The comments of many people we have spoken to about our idea have confirmed this belief.
Since 1987 we have gone on extended trips to several countries to research Places of Picasso and its planned companions. Of the last ten years we have spent over three years' time traveling, driving tens of thousands of miles among cities and towns of all sizes in Spain, France, Ireland and the Benelux Countries. Our home is in northern New Hampshire where we work on our writing and publishing. We also give slide lectures on European cultural history.
