Book by Mallett, Marla

Broadly covering weaving techniques of rugs, straps, and storage bags from the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia, this guidebook to the construction of flatweave and pile textiles produced by peasant weavers is painstakingly detailed. In what is the cumulation of 20 years' teaching, collecting, and in situ research, Mallett seeks to standardize the written descriptions of Oriental rugs and textiles by minutely examining the underlying constructions, which she illustrates in over 490 clear black-and-white illustrations, including 125 of her own drawings. These are well matched to the text. In addition to rugs, Mallett analyzes selvages, joins, end borders, and finishes and bag closures in detail. Curators and collectors will find this book helpful for the identification and appreciation of Oriental textiles; weavers, students, and fiber artists will refer to the hundreds of weaving techniques. Highly recommended for specialized collections.?Therese Duzinkiewicz Baker, Western Kentucky Univ. Libs., Bowling Green
