About the Author:
Debbie Bishop first came to the public's attention with her science-fiction comic book series, Black Tide, which was originally published by Image comics. Books by Bishop include the Award-winning, Fairies of Bladderwhack Pond; Shadow Boys; Enter The Game and the graphic novel, Awakening of the Key, from Black Tide, which is a fictional series set in a foundation of real earth history and the legend of Atlantis. Bishop co-authored, Martha's Got Nothin' On Me, a cookbook that she also did most of the illustrations for, proving, in her words, 'why I am a writer.' Partnered with visual effects icon Ray Harryhausen and Arnold Kunert in a co-venture for the Ray Harryhausen Presents brand, Bishop developed Merian C. Cooper's War Eagles from Cooper's original concept with co-writer Carl Macek into a novel and screenplay and created a fantasy-adventure series inspired by Ray's work and concepts.
Review:
(Four Stars) ENTER THE GAME, is Volume One in Paperback Series BLACK TIDE By Jonathan Dolce on September 23, 2003 BURBANK, Calif. -- February 13, 2003 -- Angel Gate, a publisher of books, comics and entertainment, today announces its inaugural title, ENTER THE GAME. Authored by Debbie Bishop, ENTER THE GAME is the first in a series of science fiction, action/adventure novels for adults and young adults, titled BLACK TIDE Rising. Based on the popular "BLACK TIDE" comic book series (also created and authored by Bishop), these novels combine science, history, technology, mysticism, metaphysics and fantasy. The lives of three characters (Justin, Kaila and Theros) are set on intertwining paths. Each action-packed book focuses on the story of one character, taking him/her back to their teenage years, modern time. These gifted and complex characters are growing up in the same world - dealing with many of the same issues facing our world today - yet experiencing life from vastly different perspectives. In ENTER THE GAME, Justin is the son of an International Special Forces agent. Justin has seen, first hand, the dangers in the world. He's been to more high schools than he can count, and he can't talk to a girl to save his life. But now, when his dad is left for dead by the powers that employ him, Justin must somehow find the courage to locate and rescue his father by himself. To do it, he will have to infiltrate the Deceivers - the most covert and deadly Black Ops organization in the world. This is Volume One in the BLACK TIDE Rising series, is recommended for audiences age 7 and older. --amazon.com
From School Library Journal Grade 5-8-Based on the comic-book series "Black Tide," this book features Justin Braddock, the son of an agent for an International Special Forces group called the Deceivers. The teen has spent most of his life moving from one military base to another and having more first days of school than he can count. While Justin and his friends Chad and Orville are characters who are worth getting to know and their social issues are recognizable, the plot raises more questions than answers. There are episodes that go nowhere, such as Justin's encounter with a man who appears to be homeless, and who speaks mysteriously with hints of foreboding. Neither he nor his message is ever mentioned again. Justin suffers from horrific nightmares about violent battles that are interwoven throughout the story. In them, he is endowed with superhuman powers and easily destroys the enemy but he is left splattered with blood. Readers never learn the significance of these dreams. Finally, he rescues his father, who has been taken hostage in the Middle East, by flying with his friend Chad alone across the Atlantic. These teenagers conduct a search-and-rescue mission that the entire Special Forces Agency was not able to accomplish, and Justin's plane skims over the ground in a landing operation one could only imagine a toy model being capable of. Perhaps in the context of the comic-book series, Enter the Game works, but as a stand-alone novel, it does not.
