Many Bodyworkers see themselves as healthcare practitioners who recognize that mind and body are one. They believe that their interventions go beyond physical, behavioral, and verbal boundaries and that intervention on any one level affects identity, health, and soul simultaneously. In BEYOND TECHNIQUE: The Hidden Dimensions of Bodywork, twenty-five bodyworkers relate the often troubling experiences they have had with their clients. They share issues that often go undiscussed - the frustration of building a practice, problematic clients, sexuality, abuse, losing clients - all of these issues are candidly presented and examined. The power of touch - coping with illness, injury, death and dying - limit setting as a means of enhancing personal integrity - are but a few of the topics discussed. After each interview Dr. Kisch addresses each topic with the wisdom gleaned from more than twenty years of professional practice. He uses these fascinating interviews to teach the reader the psychology of the bodywork profession and highlights how understanding a difficult situation can often lead to a sense of personal-professional fulfillment and nourishment.

BEYOND TECHNIQUE is an outstanding book, possibly one of the most important texts to be written for individuals practicing Massage or studying to become a Massage Therapist. This well written, realistic, and educational book should be a required text for all serious Massage training programs interested in their graduates pursuing Massage Therapy as a rewarding and long-term vocation. -- Sharon Barnes, PhD, Director, SHI Integrative Medical Massage School, Lebanon, OH
One of the most frequently asked questions by virtually all of my own students have been, "What do I do when my client has a powerful emotional response during a session, when the physical work has apparently opened up painful memories or important personal issues for them? What do I do when I find myself reacting too emotionally to a client, situation, or to my work in general?" Ronan Kisch's book has provided me, my students, and my colleagues with a well thought out and responsibly presented source of experienced observation. Ronan is both a practicing psychotherapist and a bodyworker, and is in the unique position to appreciate the strengths and shortfalls that each of these disciplines offers. He brings focus and clarity to problems that arise between professional and client and extends a psychotherapist's hand to us, beckoning toward a future where clearer heads and more open hearts, and better therapists, will prevail. -- Deane Juhan, Author, JOB'S BODY
Ronan Kisch has truly pioneered the next growth level of the integrative bodywork profession with BEYOND TECHNIQUE. His research scans a full spectrum of experience within the therapeutic environment of bodywork. In his text, Dr. Kisch has mirrored what can take the seasoned therapist twenty years of practice to learn. This work may be the most significant text yet for the advancement of the integrative bodywork professional and should be required text within any progressive bodywork training program. -- Chad Porter, LMT, Academic Director, Cumberland Institute for Wellness Education, Nashville, TN
