About the Author

Author Robert Parmelee has been involved with the Mullins Trailer for almost 20 years. He served as co-founder and Vice-President of the Mullins Owners club, as well as publisher of the club newsletter, the Red Cap Review. He has done extensive research on the subject, traveling and interviewing former Mullins employees, including the trailer patent holder, and visiting the old Mullins manufacturing plants, a few of which are still standing. He has gathered, and reproduced here, many factory photographs and documents from several sources. A number of current and former Mullins Red Cap owners have also provided some interesting stories and technical information.

From the Back Cover

This book chronicles the life and times of the little car trailer only manufactured for two years - 1936 and 1937. However, the Red Cap has endured and been endeared for over sixty years.

The book is not only for the Mullins enthusiast but for anyone interested in American transportation and social history.

A "must have" reference for anyone interested in automotive history.

A fun read! Written for the lay person, yet the Mullins book contains technical information of interest to the most ardent Mullins Trailer fan. A fascinating pictorial perspective of the trailer that's more popular today than when it was manufactured, and of the company that produced it. (Karen M. Meaders, Attorney At Law)

The Mullins Red Cap Utility Trailer is a detailed and lavishly illustrated account, and a valuable, fascinating chapter to American transportation and social history. In its brief life, the Mullins trailer foretold today's RVs and family vans. (William H. Maehl, Ph.D.)

As a retired psychologist and an avid automotive enthusiast I can tell you that this book is a must read. This book will satisfy every person interested in the Mullins trailer, either the restorer or the historian. It is well organized, with great detail for the restorer. And the research is thorough and documented for the historian.

As a youth, many of us enjoyed anything with wheels. With them we escaped our home turf and started to explore the world of dating, dragging, cruising and, of course, repairing.

The memories of these things release the good feeling of nostalgia that are sought through music, word and picture. Put on some fifties rock and roll music, read the words, look at the pictures in this book and you will be thoroughly entertained. (Cliff Helling, Ph.D., car enthusiast and Early V-8 Ford authority.)

From the Inside Flap

The automobile is an American institution. From its beginnings in the early 1900's the automobile produced enormous changes in peoples lives. In the 1930's family touring, vacationing, and camping was beginning to come into its own. Car owners soon discovered that the automobiles could not handle the family and the luggage needed for the adventures on the American highways.

This book is about one manufacturing company that saw that need and acted. We will take a look at the Mullins Company from its inception until its demise to help us understand a little more about the trailer.

The original concept for the Red Cap started in 1935 when a prototype model was built, and in 1936 the manufacturing began. The Mullins Company did a lot of advertising and you will see some of the advertisements reproduced in this book. Unfortunately the trailer was only manufactured for two years.

The trailer is popular today in its restored condition or as a fiberglass reproduction. The design has withstood the sands of time as no other utility trailer has done. A Mullins trailer being towed by any type of vehicle always turns heads whether it is an original or a reproduction.

The trailer manufacturing was discontinued in 1937.

What the real reason was we will never know for sure. It may have been due to one or a combination of the following rumors and observations.

Some people said that when companies started manufacturing cars with trunks it killed the Mullins trailer.

There was a lot of turmoil inside the Mullins Company in 1937. After C.C. Gibson died suddenly in a bathtub accident, Mullins Corp. was consolidated with Sharon Steel, which then brought in its own management people to run the Mullins company. Some think this is what caused the end of the trailer manufacturing.

Another idea about the halted trailer production is that manufacturing costs were excessive.

What we do know is that the trailer was only produced for two years. When the company discontinued manufacturing the trailer, all trailer documentation was scrapped, as well as the stamping dies for the trailer, which were stored in the scrapyard behind the main plant. The scrapyard was cleaned up during WWII for the War effort. Hence, little resources are available today.
