Chapter I- You Can't Finish Unless You Begin
When I was ten years old I had a life-changing experience that introduced me to the wonderful feeling of being important. I had the opportunity to attend my first professional baseball game at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I was sitting in the stands with my popcorn and coke in hand watching the Pittsburgh Pirates play the San Diego Padres. I was having the time of my life when suddenly a foul ball was hit. Although this may not sound like an unusual occurrence, for me this ball was a catalyst that started a chain of events that will make that night go down in history.
For some reason, I stood up and was looking for the ball when suddenly there was a white blur headed my way. Before I had a chance to move, the ball struck me with a strong blow to the chest. The next thing I knew my father was at my side asking if I was okay. I tried to speak but soon discovered that the breath had been knocked out of me. The stadium's medical crew came and rushed me downstairs to the emergency room where they x-rayed my chest. The doctor informed that I had three broken ribs, but once he taped me up, I would be fine to finish watching the game.
At that point I was ready to go home, but my father insisted that we go back and finish the game. Needless to say, I wasn't exactly thrilled at the prospect of returning to the stands--then everything changed. As we walked down to our seats, a man looked at me and said, "Arent you the little boy who got hit with the foul ball?" I nodded my head and he stood and shook my hand. Then one by one, people were standing and shaking my hand as I walked to my seat. Soon the game stopped. Before I knew it, the entire crowd was giving me a standing ovation. Then, as if the ovation werent amazing enough, I looked up and saw myself on the big screen.
At that point, I truly knew what it felt like to be special. Hundreds of total strangers cared enough about my well-being that they stopped the game just to let me know that they were glad I was okay. To this day, I can still distinctly remember the feeling I had that night.
A stadium of people, whom I will never have the opportunity to thank, unknowingly helped me pinpoint what it is I want to do with my life. After this event, I realized that my purpose in life was to try to make everyone with whom I came into contact realize that even if they werent getting a standing ovation at Three Rivers Stadium, they were certainly special enough to deserve one.
