Synopsis

This custom edition (250 pages, spiral bound) provides an introduction to Asymetrix ToolBook II Instructor and the ToolBook II Product Family. The textbook takes a modular approach in presenting ToolBook II Instructor. Module 1 gives a brief introduction to multimedia and a comprehensive look at ToolBook II with emphasis on the latest release from Asymetrix, ToolBook II Instructor. This module provides a look at Instructor's Author level tools including the Tool Bar, Tool Palette, and the Catalog. It also provides a good look at ToolBook concepts, properties of objects, and an introduction to working with the various ToolBook objects. Short lessons are designed to get you familiar with ToolBook II Instructor. Module 2 provides an overview of the various installed components in this version of ToolBook including the Resource Center and the ToolBook II Instructor Utilities. Module 3 provides an insight into how to add the various multimedia components to a ToolBook II application. Short lessons are provided to show you how to add the various multimedia components including audio, video, graphics, backdrops, and animation. Module 4 provides eleven basic lessons to get you acquainted with ToolBook including an introduction to OpenScript. Module 5 (the heart of this textbook) provides comprehensive lessons on how to use the Book Specialist options and how to create your own custom outline. Focus is placed on the following: Presentation Outline, Tutorial Outline, Exam Outline, and a Custom Outline. The Presentation Outline lesson includes lessons on the building of these types of applications are lessons related to working with buttons and fields, adding text, images, media clips, and clipart. The Tutorial Outline lesson includes lessons on using the audio and video clip players along with introducing you to the multiple-choice question object. The Exam Outline lesson shows you how to build the following questions: multiple-choice, true/false, fill-in the blank, matching, and order text. The Custom Outline lesson introduces you to hotwords, animations, graphics, and shows you how to add your own hyperlinks. Module 6 provides an overview of the Internet, the World Wide Web, Distributed Learning applications, Neuron, and WebBooks. Lessons are provided to show you how to create a Neuron application and how to write an HTML file for its display. Another lesson shows you how to create an application and convert it to HTML. Information is also provided on how to distribute these types of applications to Internet. Module 7 provides an overview of AutoPackager, the utility provided with ToolBook II that makes it easy to create files for distribution to floppy disks, CD-ROM, or Neuron. An Online Resource Center (access to files on the World Wide Web) accompanies this textbook. Supplements for the most recent releases of ToolBook 6.x will be made available for download from the Online Resource Center.

About the Author

My current interests include Internet and the World Wide Web, computer applications in the teaching curriculum, and multimedia applications for CBT. I have written and published Utilizing ToolBook to Develop Multimedia Presentations, a small training manual for Multimedia ToolBook 1.53, a multimedia authoring package from Asymetrix Corporation. I also contributed an appendix entitled "Using Microsoft Windows" as part of the text Living with Computers, Version 5.0 by Patrick G. McKeown. I did a Computerized Study Guide using Multimedia ToolBook 1.53 that accompanies the Living with Computers textbook. Current works include Utilizing Multimedia ToolBook 3.0 and Applications CD-ROM available from Boyd Fraser Publishing Company and International Thomson Publishing and Chemistry Study Pak, an interactive chemistry software package from HarperCollins College Publishers. My current works are Utilizing Asymetrix ToolBook II Instructor and Windows Tools for Multimedia and the Web. These books are available through TCC Publishing. I also am a contributing author for the Shelly Cashman book, Discovering Computers: World Wide Web Edition. I have also written and published Utilizing Asymetrix ToolBook II Assistant, a custom publication available from TCC Publishing and the Second Edition of Windows Tools for Multimedia and the Web. My most recent work is Utilizing Asymetrix ToolBook II Instructor 6.1, a custom publication available from TCC Publishing and Amazon Books. My most recent software product is Chemistry Study Pack, a multimedia CD-ROM that is will be available through Addison-Wesley-Longman in the early part of 1999.

I am currently a contract trainer for Asymetrix Corporation. I travel throughout the U.S. conducting workshops for education, business/industry, and the military. I do workshops on both ToolBook II Instructor and ToolBook II Assistant for this training. I also am a part-time Field Engineer for Education for Asymetrix. I also do individual training and consulting in a variety of areas including multimedia and the Web.

I also am one of five Syllabus Scholars, a group of Syllabus Conference and workshop faculty who have been recognized for their excellence in the application of education technology and outstanding scholarship in training their peers in its use. This group provides direction for continued development of the curriculum for education technology offered at Syllabus workshops and conferences. We have traveled to around 15 sites during the past two years including two trips to Puerto Rico.
