Synopsis

For over 12 years, Dan Woog has entertained Connecticut readers with his "Woog's World" newspaper columns. He has collected nearly 100 of his "greatest hits" in this collection. Some are cosmic, others local. Some are touching, others funny. Some inspire readers; others make them happy, angry or pensive. All revolve around Dan Woog's two favorite places: Westport, and planet earth.

Subjects include a son who helps his father commit suicide; a 96-year-old woman looking back (and ahead) on a remarkable life; a beloved pediatrician who leaves medicine; a high school soccer team confronting some ugly truths about itself, and the greatest rock and roll band in the world (no, not the Beatles or Stones).

Dan Woog observes a town as it changes: a hamburger stand closes, young families move in, personal values go kerflooey. Yet at the same time, so much remains the same: A pizza place serves great, simple food. The seasons and beach endure. Teenagers achieve greatness, get drunk and do drugs, grow roots and wings, and candidly discuss their dreams and fears.

Through it all, the outside world intrudes. Computers crash, the president comes calling, and Dan Woog himself comes out as gay.

"Woog's World: The Sequel" is a lively, engaging and thought-provoking look at American life today, written in Dan Woog's unique and unforgettable style.

From the Author

My writing has taken me in many directions: books on gay issues, soccer and education; magazine work for airlines; newsletters on sports and travel. My byline has appeared in the New York Times, USA Today and Sports Illustrated. I am proud of all that I do, and am always interested in feedback from readers.

Yet for immediate gratification and instant feedback, nothing compares to my "Woog's World" newspaper columns, which appear every Friday in Connecticut. When I set out to compile 100 or so of them in book form, I wondered how well, or even if, they would "travel" beyond my borders. Happily, readers tell me, they do.

While a few of the topics are truly local, most are not. Whether it is the unfriendliness that stuns a newcomer to town, the AIDS Quilt, a class reunion (don't worry, it's not mine), teenagers today, computers, rock and roll or friendship, they stand not only the test of time, but of place. I write about my hometown, but in doing so I really write about the planet earth. There's truly no place like home! AUTHOR BIO: Dan Woog is a freelance writer, based in Westport, Conn. His "Woog's World" columns have run every Friday since 1986 in Connecticut, and in 1994 he was voted "Best Columnist" in Fairfield and Westchester Counties. He has written 10 books and over 1,000 articles for such publications as the New York Times, Sports Illustrated and USA Today. Dan Woog is executive editor of Soccer America Magazine's Youth Soccer Letter and a noted high school soccer coach.

Dan Woog is also a nationally recognized gay activist. He is a contributing writer for The Advocate, for whom he has contributed cover stories on topics ranging from monogamy to gay adoption, and the author of three gay-themed books, on education, athletes and straight allies. He speaks nationally on gay issues.
