About the Author

Steve Brown was introduced to the Grand Strand by his wife and immediately fell in love with the place. He makes his home in Greenville, South Carolina, a little over four hours, and much too far, from the beach. A member of the Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime, he is the author of Of Love and War, a love story set against the backdrop of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and Black Fire, a novel of suspense about the modern South.

Reviews

This Gen-X mystery set in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, stars a twentysomething tough-girl lifeguard, Susan Chase, who doubles as a private eye, specializing in tracking down runaways. Her latest case quickly escalates from finding a missing teenage girl into murder. Sort of a nonsupernatural Buffy, Chase will appeal to the same crowd that loves the campy vampire slayer. For more sedate readers, however, all the smoking, drinking, and swearing (not to mention ass-kicking) is likely to grow tiresome quickly. This is certainly not a required purchase, but for libraries that want to take a chance on a small-press mystery with the potential to develop a cult readership, it might be wise to pay attention to Susan Chase. Jenny McLarin

Susan Chase works as a lifeguard on Myrtle Beach's Grand Strand, but she also specializes in finding runaways. When bitchy, penny-pinching Mrs. Rogers wants her 26-year-old daughter found, Susan almost refuses; however, once decided, she struts her attitudinal stuff in the face of jealous lovers, "artistic" temperaments, neighborhood drug sellers, and lecherous art dealers. Along the way she's shoved down stairs, assaulted in her houseboat, and accused of trespass and murder. Brown's (Black Fire) third novel offers local color, a stand-up heroine, and a deceptively simple plot. An outstanding read for the beach or anywhere else.
