Anne graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a degree in Criminal Justice and as a three year survivor of rape. Extra- Curricular was conceived in December 1996 and born nine months later, only a few days before her ten-year anniversary. She lives in Maryland with her husband Bill and their two cats Puddy (as in Tat) and Willie.
The hall phone rang. "I'll get it," Wendy said. "I'm expecting a call," and she skipped out of the room.
Jo leaned casually against the wall. She'd brought out her cigarettes and lighter, and crammed them into the pocket of her tight jeans after Wendy gave the pack a grave look.
"Oh, hi, Chloe, how's everything going?"
Chloe said, "I guess Jo's told you what happened."
"Yeah, she told me."
"Well, has she gotten over herself yet?"
The question surprised Wendy, who looked at Jo and laughed, while Jo just stood in the corner with her arms crossed, tapping her bare foot.
"Not yet. Give her time."
"Is she right there?"
"Yeah."
"I don't want to talk to her. We'll see each other tomorrow, anyway, if she hasn't called me by then."
"So you called to talk to me?"
"Really, I called to find out if that meeting your R.A. planned for your floor has happened yet. I was gonna ask for you if someone else answered."
"No, not yet. It's at seven-thirty."
"I'm just curious what it's about. If it's anything juicy, will you call me?"
"Why, so you can have a scoop for the paper tomorrow?"
"No, although that would be nice. I'm just curious. It's like a mystery and now I have all these things running through my head as to what it could be about. I mean, it's just for your floor, no one else in your dorm, so it must be about someone on your floor. It could be anything."
"Well, I'll tell you what," Wendy said, looking right at Jo. "If it's anything juicy, Jo will call you herself."
After Wendy hung up, Jo said, "Excuse me?"
"You heard me. She's your girlfriend, you call her."
The phone rang again, right before they went into the room. Wendy turned to answer it and Jo went in and closed the door.
This time, it was the police.
"This is Corporal Higgins, UMPD. You had spoken to Sergeant Waxler about an attempted rape in Ellicott hall?"
"It wasn't attempted. It...was."
"Well, anyway, there isn't any guy there by the name of Gary. Not only no Gary in that room, but none in the whole building. Weird, huh?"
Was he saying it accusingly, or like it really was weird, which it was, but not hard to figure out. He must have given her a made-up name. "So now what?"
"Well, you gave us a pretty good description of this guy, so if you want, we'll go to the room where you said the incident occurred and see what the guys who live there look like. If there's someone matching your description, we could have grounds to apprehend based on suspicion, but you'll have to come right over to the station and make an ID. We can't keep him there forever."
"Okay."
"Okay, what, ma'am? Also, I should warn you that if we go there and he's not in that particular room - like if he lives somewhere else in that dorm, but just used that room - this will only serve to tip him off. He may even come after you again, if he feels you're the one behind it. Didn't you say he knew what dorm you're in?"
"Um, I don't know. I can't remember. He knew my phone number. Did I tell him which dorm? I want to say no, but I'm not positive."
"Do you want to think about it?"
"No. I want you to do it."
"You're sure now. Remember, there could be seri..."
"I'm sure. Let me know, okay, what happens?"
"All right, ma'am. Have a nice day."
When Wendy turned around, Jo was there, in plain view of anyone walking by, holding a lit cigarette next to her thigh.
