Synopsis

The Underground Recovery Book is written to help those afflicted by addiction and the ones that love them. With so many people being directly or indirectly affected by addiction it would make sense that a practical, easy to read illustrated book would be available to help. However what is currently written is mostly not user friendly and full of misinformation. Sadly, the other addiction books available are created by academics or researchers; for other academics or researchers. What is missing is a bold in your face explanation of addiction, what it means to be an addict, and how to change and be drug free using methods that have academic and scientific validity. When I began working at an inpatient substance abuse treatment center, I noticed that the material being used was basic safe-as-milk-toast Hazelden approved literature. Copies of old copies were made and the material was so banal and uninspiring clients would constantly complain. In addition, many of the clients had reading disabilities and didn t like the long never-ending pages of text written with no emotion at a college level. Other books like the Alcoholism and Addiction Cure Book were also long uninspired reads. Finally, the handouts and books that were available in substance abuse didn t make solutions to addiction real. Family members also complained. They couldn t find a reader-friendly comprehensive book that explained the mechanics of addiction, family dynamics of addiction, and how they could assist rather than enabling the addict. Basically, what I had to work with was of no interest to the people who needed the help. With 2 million people entering inpatient substance abuse treatment yearly and millions suffering without knowledge of their illness, I decided I had to create my own. Finally, those suffering from America s dirty little secret would have a personable textbook to help them and heal them. This book contains chapters on: 1. Who is an addict? 2. The are you an addict quiz? 3. Who goes to a treatment center? 4. Mind and Mood Altering Drugs 5. How to stop using drugs and alcohol 6. Recovery 7. Advanced Recovery 8. Slogans and definitions "This book saved my life! Without it I would still be drinking. Now I understand why addiction is a disease and how to stop it. Thank you." Tony M. Detroit MI "My husband was out of control. I was embarrassed and scared. After reading your book I learned who to contact for help. I also learned how to protect myself, set boundaries and no longer be an enabler." Cynthia K. New York, NY "I have been to 10 treatment centers and just couldn't get straight. With this book I learned about why I use and how to motivate myself to stop. The workbook pages helped me to understand where I was at in the stages of change and how to deal with feelings. I owe you my life." Nancy M. Ann Arbor, MI

About the Author

I have graduated with a Master s Degree in Social Work (M.S.W.) 2008 from the University of Michigan with a 4.0 avg. I am a noted speaker and presenter at various social work conferences and have had my work published in a social work journal. In addition, I have worked in the field of substance abuse for over 12 years and am a licensed substance abuse specialist. This book was created to fill the void I found in providing user friendly material to our clients. To make this a reality, I personally paid to publish 200 books 3 months ago and have soldout every copy to various clients, peers, family members, and significant other s of substance abusers. I have been told by numerous clients and peers that it is now time to get this book available at a national and international level. This is important in order to make a positive difference in this world and to combat the misinformation such as the book, The cure for addiction book. This is not a timid book that will collect dust with the other Hazelden style literature that no one bothered reading. This book will provoke media attention due to its bold, no-holds-barred description of addiction and its realistic style of writing. The engaging nature of this text, the funny sections, parables, and descriptions, all make it accessible to a large audience. It is written to be read not to impress fossilized academics. The author is familiar with making presentations in front of hundreds of people and has a background as a rock musician. He is able to readily handle written media, radio, and television in a convincing manner. Further, his story is the classic tragic tear-jerker underdog story. Battling heroin addiction in Detroit, with the violence and daily danger of committing crime and then; going from a juvenile offender with 4 felony convictions & heroin addict to a rehabilitated 4.0 graduate degree M.S.W. from the #1 social work program in the nation The University of Michigan.
